On behalf of our residents and faculty we would like to welcome you to St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency Program. Residents and students involved in our program come from across the United States. Our program’s goal is to educate residents and students to prepare them to be outstanding physicians who are extremely competent and well equipped to handle all aspects of life as a physician. Residents are also provided with opportunity to receive a well-rounded education in interests like sports medicine, OB/GYN, wound care and many other fellowships that our residents have pursued following graduation. A number of our residents have also won national recognition as leaders.
Penn State Health St. Joseph’s is a new state of the art community hospital constructed in 2006. We have received accreditation as a stroke, chest pain, and heart failure center and have been named one of the top 50 hospitals in cardiac care. Our medical staff includes 375 physicians and over 1500 nurses and support staff. We have affiliations with Penn State Hershey Medical Center who have outpatient specialty clinics in our medical office building and work in tandem with us on complicated patient cases.
We have an unopposed osteopathic family medicine program in picturesque Reading, PA currently in ACGME pre-accreditation status. This is a diverse community where we have a clinic located in a small urban area and our main hospital located just outside the city in a rural area. There are an abundance of parks, walking trails, and outdoor spaces. We have a minor league ice hockey team, the Reading Royals, as well as a minor league baseball team the Reading Fighting Phils. The Santander Center is the home of the Reading Royals and a venue for comedians and musical entertainers. We are conveniently located 60 miles outside of Philadelphia, 110 miles from Baltimore, and 120 miles from New York City, giving residents and students broadened exposure in terms of entertainment. There are 8 airports within 130 miles of our main campus.
One of the many benefits of our residency programs is the true friendships and relationships that we make during our journey. Our residents and students spend almost as much time outside of the program socially as they do working together. We enjoy spending time together at baseball games, at the gym, at barbecues, holiday parties, or just after a day’s work. It is true that the program you join will become part of your family, as you spend much of your time with one another in training. Many of our faculty members are graduates of our program, which attests to the connections they have made during their years of training.
Our residents not only perform well on boards but also have numerous job offers prior to graduation. We take great pride in graduating high quality physicians who are prepared to transition smoothly into life as an attending physician in their chosen practice. We hope to see you at St. Joe’s in the near future!
